SDG&E’s Industrial Athletics coaches specialize in mobility, biomechanics, and strength training, as well as providing assessments that help SDG&E field employees advance their health, wellness, and fitness game.
“This company embodies a culture of safety, and the Industrial Athletics Strength and Conditioning program is an amazing opportunity to help shine a light on safety,” explains Industrial Athletics Coach Aaron Hartsock who started with SDG&E in 2021. Hartsock was brought on board to create a Program specifically focused on supporting field employees to understand the importance of proper nutrition, sleep, hydration, mobility, and stability.
“Anyone going through SDG&E field trainings are imbedded in the Industrial Athletics Strength and Conditioning program until the completion of their training,” explains Industrial Athletics Coach Randy Blessing. “The purpose of the Program is to focus on nutrition, sleep, recovery, mobility, stability, strength, and cardiovascular health, which will in turn enhance their career longevity.”
As part of the Program, Industrial Athletics Coaches concentrate on preventing field employee injuries by being proactive as opposed to reactive. “We understand that there are things that we can do to help prevent injuries, which is why it’s important to have staff specifically focused on SDG&E field employees,” says Industrial Athletics Coach Caitlin King.
“Climbing poles is an activity performed often by our Electric Operations field employees,” says Industrial Athletics Coach Tiffany Houston. “So, we help them with their core control and mobility so they can reach difficult places while on the job.”
“On the Gas Ops side, they are constantly getting in and out of trucks and trenches, squatting and kneeling, and working with hand tools while their bodies are in various positions,” says Hartsock. “And because of that, our team focuses on selecting exercises that are specific to those types of physical demands.”
